India lost a gentleman politician on December 26 night when former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh breathed his last at AIIMS, Delhi. He would be best remembered as the person who opened up India’s economy in 1991 as Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s trusted Finance Minister, but his 10-year tenure as Prime Minister was also turning point for India’s foreign policy.

Before his reluctant plunge into politics, Dr. Singh had held every top economic job: Chief Economic Advisor; Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission; Reserve Bank of India Governor and the Union Finance Secretary.

In his press conference on January 4, 2014, Singh said: “I honestly believe that history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media, or for that matter, the Opposition parties in Parliament.” This was his response to the BJP dubbing him the “weakest PM”.
