The Union government on Thursday sanctioned ₹76.32 lakh to set up a mini handloom cluster at Paturu-Gumalladibba in Kovur constituency in SPSR Nellore district. In the first phase, the Centre had allocated an amount of ₹28 lakh for the cluster.

Over 175 weaver families will benefit from this cluster, said Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy. The Nellore MP had met Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh on November 26, 2024, to seek a special cluster in the Kovur constituency as a part of Micro and Small Enterprises – Cluster Development Programme (MSE-CDP) scheme.

During his meeting with the Union Minister, the MP had highlighted the need to establish a handloom cluster in Paturu. This is one among the five new MSE-CDP proposed by the Andhra Pradesh Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles under National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP). A majority of households in Paturu are dependent on the weaving business, he had informed the Minister, requesting him to allocate necessary funds for the same.

Meanwhile, the local weavers expressed happiness after the Centre granted funds for the mini handloom cluster in Paturu-Gumalladibba.
