A five-member team, led by P. Satheesh Kumar, Designated Officer, Food Safety Department, Chennai, conducted a raid at the market.

Food Safety officials seized 350 kg of stale seafood from shops in Kasimedu fish market on Saturday. Based on suspicion that formalin, a chemical, was used in preserving the fish, the officials took six samples and sent them for laboratory testing.

A five-member team, led by P. Satheesh Kumar, Designated Officer, Food Safety Department, Chennai, conducted a raid at the market. This was based on the complaints about stale fish being sold and suspicion on the use of formalin in preserving fish.

The food safety officers checked 20 shops including two godowns. They found and seized 350 kg of stale/spoiled fish and prawns. The seafood was destroyed using disinfectants. Two shops were fined and imposed a penalty of ₹2,000 each.

“Based on suspicion that formalin was used in preserving the fish, we lifted six samples and sent them to the laboratory for testing,” Dr. Kumar said.

Officials of the Fisheries Department were also present.
