The Centre announced the Padma awards 2025 on the eve of Republic Day, conferring the highest civilian honours to 139 people, including seven Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri.
The Padma awards are conferred in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
The awards are given in various disciplines, such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service etc. The awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day by the President of India.
Padma Vibhushan, the highest honour among the Padma awards, is conferred for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.
“Twenty-three of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of foreigners, NRI (Non-resident Indians), PIO (Person of Indian Origin), OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) and 13 posthumous awardees,” the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement.
Former Chief Justice of India Justice (retired) Jagdish Singh Khehar, who gave a dissenting opinion among the Supreme Court Bench that outlawed triple talaq in 2017, was conferred with Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, as part of the Padma awards announced on the eve of Republic Day.
