Greens oppose laterite stone mining at Palora Hills in Kozhikode

Published - January 28, 2025 07:13 pm IST - Kozhikode

A local environmental organisation has opposed the move to mine laterite stones from Palora Hills situated in Ulliyeri and Atholi villages of Kozhikode district.

Functionaries of Paloramala Samrakshana Samithi claimed at a press meet here on Tuesday that mining would adversely impact the ecology of the hills, the originating point of at least 10 watersheds. The Department of Mining and Geology gave approval for the project without a detailed investigation, they alleged, adding that the officials were misled too.

Earlier, the Samithi had organised a convention against the laterite mining project. At present, the owner of two acres, where mining is supposed to be conducted, has approached the Kerala High Court. Samithi general convener N. Viswambharan and Atholi grama panchayat member Baiju Koomulli, among others, were present at the press meet.
