Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will open the three-day Kozhikode district conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] at Narayananagaram in Vadakara on Wednesday. It is being held ahead of the 24th Party Congress in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Around 500 delegates from across the district are expected to attend the deliberations at the conference. The organisers said that CPI(M) Polit Bureau member A. Vijayaraghavan, central committee members Elamaram Kareem and P. Sathidevi, and State secretariat member Puthalath Dinesan would be present. A discussion on the performance of the party in the past three years will be held at the delegates’ session. P. Mohanan, district secretary, will give his reply on January 30. A red volunteer march featuring party cadres will be held on January 31 evening. There will be a public rally as well. Mr. Vijayan would open the valedictory ceremony thereafter, they added.

New district secretary

The conference is also expected to choose a new district secretary to replace Mr. Mohanan, who has completed his three three-year terms at the helm. At least three to five probable names, including that of M. Mehboob, chairman, Consumerfed, and K.K. Dinesan, a functionary of the Kerala Karshaka Sangham, are doing the rounds. According to party insiders, Mr. Vijayan, who will be present in Vadakara throughout the conference, is likely to play a major role in finalising a name for the post.
