Prime Minister Narendra addressed a rally in Delhi on January 29, 2025, where he slammed AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal over his remarks that “poison” is being mixed in the Yamuna. Delhi has made it clear that now excuses, fake promises as well as “loot and lies” of the “AAP-da” government will not work, Mr. Modi said as he made a fervent appeal to voters to give him a chance to serve after 25 years of Congress and AAP governments.

The Congress released a manifesto for the elections today. The manifesto, which has been divided into 22 focus areas, was unveiled by Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav.

As the capital gears up for the Assembly Election, which will take place on February 5, 2025, fiery campaigns from rival political parties are well underway. Today (January 29, 2025), the city will also witness several rallies with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, J.P. On Tuesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) asked Mr. Kejriwal to provide factual evidence to substantiate his allegation that the Yamuna river was being poisoned by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled neighbouring State of Haryana.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly goes to the polls on February 5 and the votes will be counted on February 8.

‘Lie machine’ Kejriwal even speaks bad things about his birthplace: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal a “lie machine” and claimed that he was a rare politician in the country who said bad things about his own birthplace.

Addressing a public meeting in support of BJP candidate Pawan Sharma in Uttam Nagar, Mr. Sarma challenged Kejriwal to accompany him for taking a dip in the Yamuna, saying the former Delhi chief minister did not fulfil his promise to clean the river.

“Is the Yamuna water in a condition for taking a dip or drinking? he asked.

Escalating his attack on the former Delhi chief minister, Mr. Sarma said Mr. Kejriwal has now stopped citing the name of Yamuna and now “spinning the story” that Haryana government “poisoned” Delhi’s water.

“One must be mad. If an elder brother is in Haryana, his younger brother lives in Delhi. If a father lives in Haryana, his son works in Delhi,” Mr. Sarma said.

Pointing out that Mr. Kejriwal was born in Haryana, he said, “One who can say such a bad thing about his birthplace cannot have value for others.”

From Chandini Chowk to Dwarka: Delhi comes alive with campaign jingles, posters, poll promises

As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, the city has come alive with the clamour of campaign jingles, colourful posters and loudspeakers blaring messages from competing political parties.

From the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk to the bustling streets of Dwarka, each party is pulling out all the stops to make its presence felt. Music has become the lifeblood of the election campaigns.

The BJP, known for its glitzy campaigns, unveiled a remixed version of its popular 2017 anthem, “BJP Dil Mein, BJP Dilli Mein,” sung by Manoj Tiwari.

The peppy tune resonates in crowded markets and residential colonies, promising “desh ke liye kiya vikas, ab Dilli ki baari hai” (development has been done for the nation, now it’s Delhi’s turn).

The Congress is countering with a soulful melody titled “Har jarurat hogi puri, Dilli mein Congress hai jaruri” (Every need will be fulfilled, Congress is necessary in Delhi), aiming to revive its connect with voters.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has stuck to its roots with its catchy track “Phir Layenge Kejriwal” (We will bring back Kejriwal), highlighting the party’s welfare schemes in health and education.

Along with striking jingles, campaign posters from competing political parties have also caught the eyes of the voters.

In Seelampur, banners proclaiming “Delhi ka CM kaun? AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal or Gali Galoch Party” are hard to miss.

They party is also highlighting the work it has done for poor and its vision for Delhi with posters: “Gareebo ke liye crore pakke ghar banaye, ab Delhi ki baari hai” (Have build crores of permanent homes for the poor, now it’s Delhi’s turn).

The Congress, though quieter, has posters in Connaught Place highlighting its promises with slogans like “Garib ke liye Sahara, Congress tumhara” (In support of the poor, your Congress).

From food distribution to health camps, volunteers in areas like Shahdara chant slogans about “bijli, paani, and shiksha” (electricity, water, and education).

In New Delhi, BJP MP Parvesh Verma leads rallies emphasising the party’s work for women, claiming, “From Madhya Pradesh to Odisha, women are getting their due respect and financial aid. Delhi will follow next.” His loudspeaker blares, “Ek do teen char, is baar BJP sarkar” Not to be outdone, Congress counters with street plays in Tilak Nagar, highlighting issues of inflation and unemployment, while AAP’s cadre, clad in signature caps, distribute pamphlets in Malviya Nagar, with the tagline, “Kaun kar raha hai mahilaon ka samman?” (Who is respecting women?).

In Jahangirpuri, children play cricket in the shadow of a giant billboard featuring Arvind Kejriwal picture with the message, “Phir Layenge Kejriwal.” Nearby, a BJP hoarding takes a jibe: “AAP ka jhooth, na Punjab mein diya, na Delhi mein denge” (AAP’s lies, they didn’t deliver in Punjab and won’t in Delhi either).

With every party leveraging music, visuals, and grassroots outreach, Delhi’s electoral battleground is as colourful and chaotic as the city itself.

In the narrow lanes and sprawling markets, the people are bombarded with promises, catchy tunes, and larger-than-life cutouts, leaving them to decide which narrative resonates most as voting day approaches.

PIL moved in HC to curb spam calls, seeks action against dissemination of vilifying material

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, highlighting the alarming situation in the public domain since the notification for the Delhi State Legislative Assembly elections.

The petition alleges that the public domain is inundated with spam calls from various organizations and political parties promoting their campaigns, thereby infringing on citizens’ Right to Privacy, which is protected under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

The PIL states that these calls, orchestrated with the intent to spread hatred, bias, and malicious content, have not only harmed the reputation of political parties but also violated the public’s right to make an unbiased choice in electing their representatives.

The plea further highlights that the spam calls promote the agenda of a specific political party, urging the public to vote for them in exchange for promised freebies. The calls allegedly warn that if the opposition wins, these benefits will be withdrawn, creating public animosity and prejudice. Such material, the petition states, has the potential to tarnish the image of rival parties and manipulate public opinion, ultimately compromising the democratic process by influencing voters’ decisions in a biased and unfair manner.

Unfazed by high-profile visits, Valmiki Basti voters are looking out only for job opportunities

Party flags in New Delhi’s Valmiki Basti change every few minutes, reflecting the hectic political activity in the constituency from which Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal is seeking re-election against Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Parvesh Sahib Singh and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit.

On Tuesday afternoon, the area was awash with Congress flags as party leader Rahul Gandhi and Mr. Dikshit dropped by, spoke to its residents, and offered respect at Valmiki Temple. Within minutes of their departure, the Congress flags were replaced with flags of the BJP before a visit by its campaigners. Soon enough, the area changed colours to AAP’s yellow and blue before the entry of the ruling party’s pamphlet-carrying workers.

Observing the action from a distance, Vinod Pihal, a 56-year-old employee of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), said he was unimpressed with the flurry of senior political figures.

“Most of the residents belong to Scheduled Caste communities and work in the NDMC. The most pressing concern here is that our children, unlike us, are well-educated but unemployed. We want someone who will create jobs for them,” he said.

Ishwar Ujainwal, 66, a retired NDMC worker, said, “The Valmiki community in the Capital has managed to educate its children. But the problem of lack of jobs looms over us as private firms are unwilling to take members of our community and there are very few government jobs.”

‘Gravely accused another govt of genocide without any proof’: Sandeep Dikshit slams Kejriwal over “poisoned water” remark

Congress’ New Delhi candidate Sandeep Dikshit has launched a blistering attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and his opponent Arvind Kejriwal over his “poisoned water” remark and said that he has “gravely accused” another government of “genocide” without any proof.

Claiming that Mr. Kejriwal is ‘lying’, Mr. Dikshit called for action on him from the Election Commission of India. Speaking to ANI, Mr. Dikshit said, “Yesterday I wrote a letter to the Election Commission. He has gravely accused another government of genocide without any proof and is saying Delhi Jal Board engineers has prevented the poisons to get mixed with the water. How they would have stopped only Arvind Kejriwal and his engineers know this... But when Jal Board CEO himself says no such thing has happened, it proves that Mr. Kejriwal is lying. EC should immediately take action on it...”

Kejriwal promised to do clean politics but built a sheesh mahal and gave shape to the liquor scam: Rahul Gandhi

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia on Tuesday (January 28, 2025), saying Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister “ran away from his constituency” because “people here already know that he is the architect of the liquor scam”.

Ahead of the February 5 Assembly election, AAP had changed Mr. Sisodia’s constituency from Patparganj, from where he has been elected thrice, to Jangpura. Civil services tutor Avadh Ojha was fielded in place of the former Deputy CM.

The senior Congress leader also attacked AAP national convener and former CM Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of disappearing when the city residents needed him. “Where was Mr. Kejriwal when the Delhi riots were happening or when people were suffering during COVID?” he said, addressing a rally in Patparganj.

The Rae Bareli MP added, “I don’t know whether the other parties are afraid of [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi, but Mr. Kejriwal is afraid of him. He [the AAP chief] promised to do clean politics but built a sheesh mahal and gave shape to the liquor scam.”
