The academic council of the University of Calicut has approved regulations for the five-year integrated postgraduate programmes under the choice-based credit and semester system in its affiliated colleges.

The council meeting, presided over by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran, was held on the university campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district on Tuesday. Mr. Raveendran also directed the officials to correct the anomalies and mistakes in the regulations of the four-year undergraduate programmes as well.

The meeting authorised the Controller of Examinations to inquire into the allegations that teachers who don’t teach certain subjects were put in charge of evaluation of their answer scripts. It was pointed out that teachers in other subjects were deployed for evaluation camps for political science. Similar instances were reported in the evaluation of answer scripts of journalism courses as English language teachers were deputed there. Mr. Raveendran asked the Controller to urgently intervene into those complaints.

The meeting decided not to issue equivalency certificates or approval to courses run by other universities that are not recognised by the University Grants Commission. The unauthorised promotion of Bachelor of Hotel Management students at the Oriental School of Hotel Management, Lakkidi, Wayanad, too was discussed. Those who did not clear the first year of the course were allegedly promoted to the third year and others who had not cleared the second year of the course were allegedly promoted to the fourth year.

A total of 763 students were thus promoted and 301 had got their degree certificates. It was claimed that since the lapses had not happened on the part of the students, their certificates could be approved. A committee was appointed to give recommendations to make academic council meetings free of paper. K. Pradeep Kumar, P. Sivadasan, and P. Rasheed Ahammed are its members.
