The Tiruvottiyur police arrested a youth on Thursday for allegedly murdering his wife’s relative.

The police identified the victim as S. Dhanalakshmi, 45, of Vasanth Nagar in Tiruvottiyur. Her niece Tamilselvi married M. Kalimuthu, 25, of Tiruppur, two years ago. The couple had separated last year after a domestic dispute, with Kalimuthu staying in Tiruppur and Tamilselvi coming to Chennai. In a bid to reconcile with Tamilselvi, Kalimuthu visited her frequently. After multiple arguments during these visits, Dhanalakshmi admonished Kalimuthu for his behaviour.

Angered by this and blaming her for the couple’s separation, Kalimuthu stabbed Dhanalakshmi to death with a knife on Wednesday. He then fled the spot. After investigating, the police arrested Kalimuthu. He was remanded in judicial custody.
