The BJP staged a thumping comeback in Delhi after more than 26 years as it won 48 of the 70 seats in the Assembly polls on Saturday (February 8, 2025). The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured victories from 22 seats and the Congress drew a blank for a third straight time.

AAP candidate from Matia Mahal Aaley Mohammad Iqbal registered the highest victory margin of 42,724 votes in the polls, defeating BJP’s Deepti Indora, according to the Election Commission’s (EC) data.

BJP’s Chandan Kumar Choudhary won the Sangam Vihar seat by the lowest margin of 344 votes. The BJP’s vote share was 45.56%, while the AAP secured 43.57% votes and the Congress’s poll percentage was 6.34.

BJP’s Parvesh Verma emerged as a giant-slayer with his victory against AAP supremo and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a fierce contest from the New Delhi seat by a margin of 4,089 votes.

Amid the BJP’s sweeping victory, Chief Minister Atishi and three Ministers in the outgoing AAP government - Gopal Rai, Mukesh Ahlawat and Imran Hussain - managed to secure wins. CM Atishi has won from the Kalkaji seat defeating BJP rival Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes at the end of the twelfth rounds of counting.

The Congress was decimated in the Delhi elections, failing to open its account in the 70-member assembly for a third consecutive time and its key candidates suffering crushing defeats. The Congress also asserted that it would form a government in the national capital in 2030.

Results of the Delhi Assembly election are not a vindication of Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi’s policies but a referendum on Arvind Kejriwal and AAP, the Congress said on Saturday (February 8, 2025) as it vowed to bounce back from another whitewash.

Will make every effort to clean Yamuna, ensure Delhi is future-ready: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (February 8, 2025) promised to make every effort to clean the Yamuna river, resolve civic issues related to cleanliness and pollution, and deliver on all his guarantees to make Delhi a future-ready city.

Addressing party workers after the BJP’s victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, PM Modi also slammed the outgoing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for insulting people’s faith by making no efforts to clean the Yamuna, failing to build good roads in the capital and keeping the city clean.

“I had pledged during the election campaign that we will make Yamunaji the identity of Delhi city. I know this work is difficult and will take a long time. No matter how much time is spent, how much energy is used, we will make every effort to serve the Yamuna,” the prime minister said at the victory celebrations at BJP headquarters in New Delhi.

    BJP’s vote share up by 7%, AAP’s down by 10%; Cong’s rises by 2%

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which was routed in the Delhi Assembly elections saw the erosion of nearly 10% points in its vote share while the winner BJP not only saw a resurgence but also a significant increase in its vote share.

The BJP was out of power in the national capital for over 26 years.

A win on any seat remained elusive for the Congress even as it saw a marginal improvement in its vote share.

AAP secured a vote share of 43.57%, down from 53.57% in the 2020 polls. In the 2015 Assembly elections, it had secured 54.5% of the votes.

“Congress has scored a double hat-trick of scoring zero; they are giving themselves gold medal of defeat,” Prime Minister Modi said at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.

Congress has stolen issues of Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, DMK in Tamil Nadu, RJD in Bihar. Congress also tried to appropriate BJP vote bank by making rounds of temples but stopped when it realised they are not succeeding,” Mr. Modi added.

Amid a harrowing defeat for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi Assembly elections, incumbent Chief Minister Atishi has retained her Kalkaji seat, defeating her challenger Ramesh Bhidhuri of the Bharatiya Janata Party. But she is part of a minority, in more ways than one: women’s representation is poised to remain low during the upcoming term, with only five women having won seats. This is even as marginally more women voters turned out to vote than male voters.

Results a referendum on Kejriwal, AAP; Congress has increased vote share: Jairam Ramesh

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh says the results are “nothing more than a referendum on Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party”.

“After all, at the height of the PM’s popularity in 2015 and 2020, AAP had won decisively in Delhi. This shows that, rather than being vindication of the policies of the PM, this vote is a rejection of Arvind Kejriwal’s politics of deceit, deception, and vastly exaggerated claims of achievement,” Mr. Ramesh says.

He says the Congress took the lead in “highlighting the various scams that have occurred under Arvind Kejriwal and voters have pronounced their judgement on his twelve years of misrule”.

“The Congress was expecting to do better. It has, however, increased its vote share. The campaign of the Congress was vigorous. It may not be in the Assembly but it is definitely a presence in Delhi, a presence that will be expanded electorally with the sustained efforts of lakhs of Congress workers. There will be a Congress Govt once again in Delhi in 2030,” he adds.
