BJP storms to power in Delhi after 26 years

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday (February 8, 2025) conceded his party’s defeat in the high-stakes Delhi Assembly elections. The AAP is heading towards a big defeat in the 70-member Assembly with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading on 47 seats, leaving the AAP to just 23 seats. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and his number two Manish Sisodia are trailing BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Tarvinder Singh Marwah, respectively.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has pulled into the lead in the Delhi Assembly elections, effectively preventing the Aam Aadmi Party from forming the government in the National Capital Territory for a fourth time. Some prominent AAP candidates are looking at crushing losses, including Arvind Kejriwal, who is trailing behind BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh in the New Delhi constituency. Yet other have held on to their seats, albeit with reduced margins.

BJP’s Chandrabhanu Paswan won by a margin of 61,710 votes over Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Ajit Prasad after the 31st round of counting for the Milkipur Assembly bypolll on Saturday (February 8, 2025), according to the Election Commission website. While Mr. Paswan polled 1,46,397 votes, Mr. Ajit Prasad, the son of SP’s Faizabad MP Awadesh Prasad, got 84,867 votes.

DMK candidate Chandhirakumar wins by 91,558 votes in Erode (East) bypoll result

The counting of votes for the byelection to the Erode (East) Assembly constituency began at the Government College of Engineering in Chithode on Saturday (February 8, 2025). The DMK won the Erode bypoll by a margin of 91,558 votes. DMK candidate V.C. Chandhirakumar was declared the winner. All the 45 candidates forfeited their deposits.

Women entitled to maintenance from second husband even if previous marriage legally subsisting says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has held that a woman would be entitled to claim maintenance under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) from her second husband even if her previous marriage was legally subsisting. A Bench of Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma said the objective of social welfare provisions such as maintenance must be given an expansive interpretation and a strict legal interpretation should not be allowed to defeat its humanitarian purpose.

Private Bills seek sitting of Parliament for at least 100 days a year

Senior Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien and Manoj Kumar Jha have moved separate Bills seeking to make the sitting of Parliament mandatory at least for 100 days in a year. The leaders said the move is to reform the Parliamentary system by ensuring that the working hours of the House are not lost due to disruptions.

21 MPs write to Amit Shah seeking updates on Naga peace process

A group of 21 parliamentarians have written to Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a detailed update on the Naga peace process in the ongoing session of Parliament. The MPs said that since 2021 there is no full-time interlocutor for Naga peace talks and peace negotiations, which are essential for achieving lasting stability, “shouldn’t be relegated to bureaucratic manoeuvring devoid of democratic oversight.”

Trump says he’s ending Biden’s classified intelligence briefings in payback move

President Donald Trump said Friday (February 7, 2025) that he’s revoking former President Joe Biden’s access to government secrets and ending the daily intelligence briefings he’s receiving in payback for Mr. Biden doing the same to him in 2021. Mr. Trump announced his decision in a post on his social media platform shortly after he arrived at his Mar-a-Lago home and private club in Palm Beach for the weekend.
