The Central Government has been meeting 90% of the budgetary requirements of Puducherry and would continue to meet its requirements, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan said.
When asked why Puducherry which was facing a financial crunch was not included in the Finance Commission, he said there was no financial crunch in the U.T. and the Centre had been catering for the requirement of funds.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Murugan said the Central government had allocated approximately ₹3,432 crore for Puducherry in the Union budget for 2025-26, including ₹1,450 crore for Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer).
The Union government had also allocated ₹186.44 crore to Puducherry under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The loan limit for Kisan Credit Card had been increased from ₹3 to ₹5 lakh. This will benefit a total of 16,000 farmers in Puducherry, he said.
The Union Budget presented on February 1 was a vision document for country’s development in the next 25 years.
Infrastructure played a key role. Industries, roads, ports, airports and railway stations had developed considerably, especially in Tamil Nadu. About ₹6,626 crore was allocated for projects in Tamil Nadu in the 2025-26 Railway Budget, for which work was under progress. The amount was significantly high when compared to the allotment of ₹800 crore made during the United Progressive Alliance government of 2009-14, he said.
