Seven persons from Hyderabad were killed and two sustained injuries when the mini bus they were travelling in had a head-on collision with a truck in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district on Tuesday (January 11, 2025) morning. The travellers were returning to Hyderabad from Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.
The deceased have been identified as 58-year-old Anand Kansari, a resident of Dilsukhnagar, 56-year-old T. V. Prasad, a resident of Tarnaka, Somavaram Shashikant, 55-year-old Ravi Kumar, 62-year-old Mallareddy, 47-year-old P. Santosh and 32-year-old driver and owner of the vehicle Raju Errakunta, all residents of Nacharam.
While 52-year-old S. Naveenacharya, a resident of Saroornagar and 62-year-old Balakishan Shriram, a resident of Nacharam, were shifted to Government Medical College in Jabalpur where they are undergoing treatment.
The incident was reported around 8.15 a.m. According to the police, all nine men were in the mini bus travelling near the canal between Mohla and Bargi villages in Jabalpur district when a truck coming in the opposite direction rammed into it. Due to the impact of the crash, seven died on the spot, while two sustained injuries.
“The victims were stuck between the truck and the canal wall and had to be removed with the help of cutters. The bodies have been sent for post mortem evaluation,” said Jabalpur Rural Additional Superintendent of Police Sonali Dubey.
The Jabalpur Rural police have booked a case and initiated investigation. The truck driver has been taken into custody for questioning and the Madhya Pradesh authorities are in the process of making arrangements to shift the bodies to Hyderabad for final rites.
“The bodies will be sent to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad. The group seems to be unrelated. They had booked a vehicle for the pilgrimage. While one of them was a bank employee, a few were teachers and others were workers,” another official from the Jabalpur police said.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock over the road accident. He directed officials to make arrangements to provide better medical treatment to the injured and also take required relief measures.
Senior leaders from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed condolences to the families which lost their loved ones.
Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender spoke to the Jabalpur district collector and MPs from there. He has requested the Post-Mortem Examination (PME) to be completed at the earliest.
