The Tamil Nadu government should focus more on improving amenities in temples, Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said here on Tuesday.

Participating in the Thai Poosam celebrations at the Kottai Sangameshwarar temple in the city, she told the media that in many temples the facilities were inadequate. All political parties should speak for Hindu temples. The DMK and its allies were supporting efforts to change the name of Thiruparankundram hillock, and in the recent years some parties, especially the DMK and its allies, were playing “minority politics”, she alleged.

Ms. Srinivasan said she had asked for the construction of ‘raja gopuram’ for the Sangameshwarar temple. A year ago, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P. K. Sekar Babu had promised to do so, but no steps were taken in this regard. Similarly, people living in Coimbatore south constituency had been demanding for long the revival of the temple car festival on Sivarathri day. The government was not permitting it citing law and order problem. It should permit the car festival, she said.
