Two soldiers, including a Captain, were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) plated by militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu’s Akhnoor Sector.

An Army spokesman said suspected IED blast was reported in Laleali in Akhnoor Sector during a fence patrol, resulting in two fatalities.

“Our troops are dominating the area and search operations are underway,” the spokesman said.

The deceased soldiers were identified as Captain K.S. Bakshi and Naik Mukesh. Official sources said a third soldier was also injured in the blast.

The latest incident takes place a day after a suspected sniper fire hit a soldier along the LoC in Jammu’s Rajouri district.

The incident poses a major challenge to the security agencies given the heightened surveillance, both technical as well as human, put in place along the LoC in J&K in the past one year.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid tributes to the slain soldiers. “I salute the supreme sacrifice of our Army bravehearts who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Their valour and sacrifice will never be forgotten. The entire nation stands firmly with the family of the martyrs in this hour of grief,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

Lt. Gen. M.V. Suchindra Kumar, the General Officer Commanding Northern Command, “solemnly salute the supreme sacrifice of bravehearts in a suspected IED blast”.
