Three die in a fire triggered from gas leak in Nungambakkam

Three people, who had severe burn injuries due to LPG cylinder leak fire at their house in Nungambakkam on February 3, died without responding to treatment at Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

While the family was changing LPG cylinder, a gas leak could have triggered the fire, police said. The victims have been identified as Veerakumar, 62, a daily wager, his wife Lakshmi, 57, a domestic aid and their relative Gunasekaran, 40 - residents of Vaikundapuram, Nungambakkam.

Police sources said on Tuesday, as the cooking cylinder was empty, Lakshmi changed it with new one. Then she went to light a lamp at a pooja room and suddenly fire, which was triggered following leak from gas cylinder, engulfed her. Hearing her screams, her husband who came to her rescue and their relative also came to put off the fire but were also caught in the fire. Neighbours put out the fire and alerted police.

The trio with 70% burns were rushed and admitted to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. They succumbed to burns one after another on Monday and Tuesday at the hospital without responding to the treatment.
