A 12-year-old girl , who was battling a rare and life-threatening heart condition, was successfully treated with a complex surgical procedure at Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani.
The young patient was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy, a condition that causes thickening of the heart muscle. While it is more common among adults, it is rare and dangerous in children, as per a press release from the hospital. She also had a subaortic membrane, a rare tissue growth beneath the aortic valve, making her condition even more complex.
Led by Anbarasu Mohanraj, Clinical Lead, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, a team of five surgeons performed an intricate and high-risk surgery known as Extended Septal Myectomy using a heart-lung Machine. The surgery was a success and within just 48 hours, the patient was out of the ICU and on the road to recovery. Today, she is healthy and looking forward to her future, with her dream of becoming a doctor reignited, the release said.
Dr. Mohanraj stated, “To see her smile and talk about her future again is the most rewarding part of our work.” Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group Hospitals, also spoke.
