Lakhs of devotees from various parts of Tamil Nadu offered special prayers at Subramaniya Swami Temple here on Tuesday as part of Thai Poosam celebrations.

After the temple was opened at 1 a.m., rituals and special prayers were conducted. Following Asthra Devar’s holy dip in the sea at 6.30 a.m., special abhishekam and deepaaraadhanai were conducted.

After deepaaraadhanai, Swami was taken in procession to Thai poosa mandapam where special alangaaram and abhishekam were conducted. After being taken in a procession on a golden peacock, the deity reached the temple again through car streets and special prayers were performed.

Thousands of padayatris arrived at the shrine from various southern districts with kaavadi and offered prayers in the shrine after taking a holy dip in the sea. Devotees had to stand in long queue for several hours since Monday midnight to offer prayers. Devotees who could not enter the temple due to the massive crowd offered prayers on the beach.

Led by Superintendent of Police Albert John, the police made elaborate security arrangements in and around Tiruchendur.

Special buses from all southern districts were operated to Tiruchendur in view of the celebrations.
