Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take steps for upgrading the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru as the Regional Hospital.

In a letter to Mr. Siddaramaiah on Monday, Capt. Chowta appealed to the Chief Minister to take the measures for the same in the State Budget for 2025-26.

The MP said that in addition to patients from Dakshina Kannada, the hospital also treated patients from Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts. The 905-bed capacity hospital is also facing the dearth of nurses and other staff.

The Union government’s grant will also be sought to improve facilities at the hospital. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) has also assured of extending its cooperation in improving the facilities at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the MP said in a release that the hospital is being modernised by investing over ₹90 crore under various schemes of the Union government. MRPL has also contributed funds under its corporate social responsibility. The super-speciality wing at the hospital was opened recently. The Union government had released ₹60 crore for the same.

He said that a critical care unit and Integrated public health laboratory will come up at the hospital at a cost of ₹25.11 crore sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. Once the unit and laboratory became operational, the treating capacity of the hospital will be strengthened further.

Capt. Chowta said that he congratulated a team of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons (CTVS) of the hospital for removing a huge wooden piece measuring 20 cm long and a broken steel chain from the neck of a 12-year-old boy by performing surgery on Sunday.

The team, led by Dr. Suresh Pai, performed the life-saving surgery on the boy between 1.30 a.m. and 3.30 a.m. and removed the wooden piece and the broken chain.
