A.K.G. Study and Research Centre, Patayam Gopalan Study and Research Centre, and local self-government institutions in Kannur district are organising a national seminar on ‘Decentralisation and Local Self-Government’ from February 22 to 24 at the E.K. Nayanar Academy as part of the fifth International Kerala Studies Congress.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday (February 11), CPI(M) district secretary and event convener M.V. Jayarajan said the seminar aimed to discuss the evolution and future of decentralisation in the State, drawing from 28 years of experience since the LDF government of 1996 empowered local self-government institutions by transferring the powers of 16 departments to them.

He said the seminar would feature academic sessions across 17 subject groups with 85 papers to be presented by experts, researchers, and students. Over 1,000 participants, including representatives, officials, population planners and experts from other States, are expected to attend.

Local Self-Government Minister M.B Rajesh will inaugurate the seminar. Former Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty will preside over the function. The second day will include 240 presentations and video screenings of 150 model projects by local self-government institutions at St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School, Mr. Jayarajan said.

He added that the concluding day would feature a seminar on ‘Decentralisation in Kerala - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’ and a felicitation ceremony for Mr. Mohammed Kutty. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the closing session. Ministers and experts in local governance, rural development, and urban development from other States will be present on the occasion.
