The NTR and Krishna district administrations have sounded an alert on the possible spread of bird flu.

NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha and Krishna District Collector D.K. Balaji, on Tuesday, urged people to remain alert to bird flu disease. There is a risk of the disease affecting humans, they said.

Mr. Lakshmisha said that a case of bird flu was confirmed near Gamapalagudem village in NTR District, and instructions were issued to the veterinary officials to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, Telangana officials also sounded a red alert as a bird flu case was confirmed along the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana border.

District Collectors have asked officials to maintain strict surveillance on chicken, meat and eggs coming from neighbouring districts. They also directed the officials to stop supply of eggs to the anganwadi centres.

Officials were asked to conduct inspections of vehicles transporting chicken and eggs at all checkposts, and carry out inspections at suspicious chicken shops in village panchayats and municipalities. They were told to collect samples from those showing flu symptoms and take precautionary measures as directed by health officials.

The officials were also asked to inspect all poultry farms by the Animal Husbandry Department to ensure that protection, sanitation, and vaccination measures are followed. Establishment of Rapid Response Teams along with surveillance teams in every mandal was directed, with officials told to ensure all chicken products are thoroughly boiled before consumption. They were also asked to inspect chicken at Agriculture Market Committee checkposts and give approval only after thorough checks.
