Over 100 suggestions were provided by citizens on the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill during the second public consultation meeting held for the Bommanahalli, South, Rajarajeshwari Nagar and West zones of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday.
The appointment of a single mayor and extension of their term, a lottery system for the appointment of ward committee members, a clear information about the extent of the expansion of Bengaluru were some of the most important suggestions given. Citizens also spoke about entrusting more responsibilities to councillors in the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), the merger of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) with GBA.
Rizwan Arshad, Shivajinagar MLA, who heads the joint legislature committee examining the Bill, said it was not possible to deliver basic amenities to citizens in a fair and effective manner in the existing system. “This is why we want to change the system of administration. While we have already studied the administrations of different states and countries for the Bill, we also want to incorporate the suggestions from citizens who have the best interests of Bengaluru in their minds,” he said.
