‘Botched’ surgery: Harshina to stage ‘satyagraha’ in Kozhikode on Feb. 13

K.K. Harshina, the victim of an alleged case of medical negligence at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, is planning to stage a ‘satyagraha’ in the city on February 13 seeking justice from the government.

Ms. Harshina had to suffer for around five years after a surgical instrument was reportedly left behind in her stomach during a C-section surgery conducted at the hospital in 2017. The instrument was removed only in 2022. Though she had conducted agitations a couple of times in recent past and the government promised to address her concerns, there has not been any progress in meeting most of her demands, including a fair compensation.

Members of the K.K. Harshina Samarasahaya Samithi, an organisation formed to help her take up the agitation, told the media on Tuesday (February 11) that the accused in the case managed to get a stay order from the High Court in July 2024 against the proceedings in the trial court because of the ineffective arguments of the prosecution. It happened when the trial in the case was about to begin in the Kunnamangalam court based on the chargesheet filed by the police. They alleged that there could have been an attempt to sabotage the case as the prosecution had yet to file a petition in the High Court to take up the case again.

Dinesh Perumanna, chairman of the samithi, said that K. Muraleedharan, former MP, would open the protest event to be held at Kidson Corner at 10 a.m. P.V. Anvar, All-India Trinamool Congress Kerala State coordinator, would speak at the valedictory event in the evening.
