Telangana lost lakhs of houses meant for poor people in the rural areas under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) during the BRS regime if the numbers revealed by the Minister of State for Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar are an indication.
The Minister disclosed this in reply to a question from Khammam MP Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy in the Lok Sabha on February 11. In a written reply, the Minister said that Telangana was allocated 70,674 houses for the financial years 2016-17 and 2017-18 under PMAY-G and an amount of ₹190.79 crore were also released as first instalment of Central share against the targets of FY 2016-17 for implementation of the scheme.
However, the then BRS government did not implement the PMAY-G Scheme and refunded the amount of ₹190.79 crore. Consequently, no funds were allocated under PMAY-G for Telangana during the last three years.
He further said that Telangana failed to conduct the Awaas + 2018 survey during January 2018 to March 2019 and hence eligible households under PMAY-G in the State could not be identified. “Thus, no targets could be allocated to the State during the current FY 2024-25,” he added.
However, the Congress government has now communicated its willingness to implement PMAY-G in the State during the 2024-25 financial year. At present, the Ministry is facilitating the State in the conduct of Awaas + 2024 survey for identification of eligible rural households using face-based authentication in the State.
