Several Jamia Millia Islamia university students are protesting against the administration for sending a show-cause notice to students for holding a demonstration last December.
The protesters, led by the Left-affiliated All India Students’ Association (AISA), who went on strike on Monday, are also demanding the revoking of an office memorandum issued last November barring meetings, gatherings, dharnas, and sloganeering without prior permission of the administration, and disciplinary action for non-compliance.
The university administration has not yet responded to their demands.
AISA said the administration has sent show-cause notices to several students for organising ‘Jamia Resistance Day’ on December 15 last year, which marked the fifth anniversary of violence in the university following anti-CAA protests.
The university’s disciplinary committee will meet on February 25 to review the role of the two PhD scholars in organising the ‘Jamia Resistance Day’.
Saurabh, one of the PhD scholars who received the show-cause notice, said four students received such notices, and the disciplinary committee will investigate his case. “I responded to the show-cause notice, but the administration told me that the response was unsatisfactory,” he alleged.
Meanwhile, Arpan, a member of AISA, said, “We observed Jamia Resistance Day in 2023 without facing any disciplinary action, but in 2024, students received notices and inquiries were initiated.”
“Our protest will continue till our demands are met and freedom of expression is restored inside the campus,” he added.
