Delhi Police on Tuesday conducted searches at multiple locations in Jamia Nagar of south-east Delhi to arrest Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan for “obstructing a team of police and helping a proclaimed offender escape”.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Ravi Kumar Singh said a Crime Branch team was in the Jamia Nagar area on Monday evening to arrest a person named Shavez Khan in connection with an assault case.

“Shavez was found near Al Taqua mosque. He was questioned about the assault but kept talking about irrelevant things. In a while, the local MLA Amanatullah arrived with 20-25 supporters and threatened and manhandled the police personnel,” the DCP said.

In the melee, Shavez fled, prompting the police to conduct search operations. The police also registered a case against the AAP MLA and his supporters under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 221 (obstruction of public servants while they are performing duties), 132 (criminal force or assault against a public servant while they are performing their duties), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 191 (rioting), 190 (unlawful assembly), 263 (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 111 (organised crime).

The DCP said the AAP MLA and Shavez are still absconding.

This is the second case in a week against Mr. Khan. He was booked for breaching the model code of conduct during the Delhi Assembly poll by allegedly campaigning in the Zakir Nagar area of Okhla with his followers on the eve of polling day.
