This is the second such incident in two days.

Updated - February 12, 2025 04:30 pm IST - Kozhikode:

One more person has been killed in wild elephant attack in Wayanad district of Kerala. This is the second such death there in the past two days.

According to sources, the deceased is Balan, 27, a native of Attamala mear Meppadi. He was found dead on Wednesday. Attamala is close to Mundakkai and Chooralmala where a devastating landslide happened in July last year. Local residents are claiming that wild elephants have been frequenting the area after the incident. Very few people are staying there now.

Manu, 45, from Vellari Colony in Tamil Nadu, was trampled to death on February 10 and his body was found on the next day. The incident had led to widespread protests with local residents not allowing to take over his body. Activists of the United Democratic Front staged another protest outside the Sulthan Bathery Taluk Hospital blocking the ambulance carrying the body and they later took out a march to a Forest department office as well.

Hartal fails to make impact

Meanwhile, a dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Farmers Relief Forum and the Kerala unit of the All-India Trinamool Congress in the district failed to make any impact. Major political parties are staying away from the hartal and bus operators and merchants’ organisations such as the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi have not extended support to it.
