Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi has sparked controversy over his remarks at the pre-release event of Brahma Anandam, where he expressed his desire for a grandson to carry forward his legacy. His comments have since been perceived as sexist by many, have led to widespread criticism on social media.

Speaking at the event, Chiranjeevi said, “When I’m at home, it doesn’t feel like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels like I’m a ladies’ hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around. I keep wishing and telling (Ram) Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues, but his daughter is the apple of his eye... I’m scared that he might again have a girl.”

The statement did not sit well with many, as critics accused the veteran actor of implying that only a male heir could carry forward his family’s legacy. Social media users called out the outdated mindset, and talked about how daughters are just as capable of upholding a family’s name and achievements.

Chiranjeevi, who has two daughters — Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela — is already a grandfather to multiple granddaughters, including Ram Charan’s daughter, who was born on June 20, 2023. At the time of her birth, he seemed joyful, calling her the “Little Mega Princess.”

On the professional front, Chiranjeevi is gearing up for his next film, Vishwambhara, which is set to release later this year.
