E-commerce giant Shopify has shut down Kanye West’s Yeezy clothing website, citing violations of its terms of service. The move comes after the website was used earlier this week to feature a $20 white T-shirt adorned with a black swastika.
The controversial rapper and entrepreneur, legally known as Ye since 2021, promoted the website during a cryptic Super Bowl LIX commercial that aired on Sunday. By Tuesday, the site displayed error messages reading, “This store is unavailable.”
Yeezy.com played a central role in Ye’s Super Bowl advertisement, which initially showcased other merchandise, including hoodies and socks. However, according to Variety, the site was updated within an hour of the ad’s airing to feature the swastika-adorned shirt
.The termination follows a series of inflammatory actions and statements by Ye. He has been making antisemitic and hateful remarks on platform X. Over the weekend, he declared himself a Nazi, expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler, and called for the release of Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently awaiting trial on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.
Ye’s X account was restricted by Elon Musk over the weekend, with Mr. Musk labelling it NSFW “given what he has posted.” Before deactivating his account, Ye tweeted, “I appreciate Elon for allowing me to vent. It has been very cathartic to use the world as a sounding board.”
The termination of Yeezy.com marks the latest fallout in Ye’s ongoing controversies, as businesses and platforms distance themselves from his inflammatory behaviour and rhetoric.
