The war satire Atropia, about actors in a military role-playing facility, won the grand jury prize in the Sundance Film Festival’s US dramatic competition, while the Dylan O’Brien movie Twinless got the coveted audience award. Other grand jury winners included the documentaries Seeds, about farmers in rural Georgia and Cutting Through the Rocks, about the first elected councilwoman in an Iranian village. Notably, the Indian drama Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears), about a city dweller mourning his father in the western Indian countryside, won the top prize in the world cinema competition.

Netflix India on Monday unveiled an exciting content slate for 2025 at the ‘Next on Netflix’ event in Mumbai. The event was attended by many A-list celebrities, including Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar, R Madhavan, Rajkummar Rao, Siddharth, Sanya Malhotra, Venkatesh Daggubati, Saif Ali Khan, and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan among others.

The controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez actor Karla Sofía Gascón’s past tweets blew over this week. On Monday, the actor apologised for her controversial past tweets, sharing a lengthy post in which she also defended that her posts were taken out of context. Meanwhile, her co-star Zoe Saldaña said that the controversy made her sad and that she “doesn’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.” Saldaña and director Jacques Audiard have publicly distanced themselves from Gascón.

Meanwhile, Netflix took steps to distance itself from the star. The platform withdrew financial support for her travel and styling, leaving her to cover her own expenses should she choose to attend major awards ceremonies. Netflix and Gascón’s PR agency, The Lede Company, have ceased direct communication with her, now coordinating only through her UTA representative.

A joint meeting of the film bodies in the Malayalam film industry on Thursday decided to go on a strike from June 1 onwards demanding an end to the double taxation on movie tickets and a salary cut by the actors in view of the rising cost of film production. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA), the Film Employees Federation of Kerala, Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala, and the Kerala Film Distributors Association.
